Are you a parent of an 8th grade student? Don’t miss the “Life After Middle School” parent night tonight, November 1, from 7-9 PM at the Jack B. Kussmaul Theater at Frederick Community College. Come learn about many opportunities that will be available to your child both in high school and beyond. Our goal is that all students leave high school college and career ready. Hear representatives speak about FCPS high school programs and graduation requirements, Career & Technology Center opportunities, community college and four-year college options, military opportunities, and college savings programs. Interested in investing an evening to gather information which will allow you to better support your child in the many decisions that lie ahead? Call 301-624-2716 to RSVP today.
The State of Maryland, through the College Savings Plan of Maryland, offers two “529” plans that allow families to invest in their children’s future and help them achieve the goal of a college education, while qualifying for an income tax deduction on their MD state taxes. As in previous years, we will be hosting a representative here at Monocacy Middle. The table will be set up from 4 to 7 PM on Thursday, November 10th during Parent Teacher Conference Night. Please mark your calendar and plan to stop by to get information and ask questions. Any questions prior to that night, please contact Sally Sanino, School Counselor, @ 240-236-4728 sally.sanino@fcps.org

We have put our MoMS Holiday Outreach Drive into motion!
This year we will be collecting nonperishable food items, toiletries and new sweatshirts to benefit the students in our community. Any questions, please contact Sally Sanino @ 240-236-4728 sally.sanino@fcps.org
Thank you for your generous support!
MoMS School Library Media Center book Fair is on November 7, 9, 10, & 11.
We will be open during parent teacher conferences.
6th graders have completed their study of Ecosystems, and are moving on to the Water Module in term 2. Students will begin by learning about states of matter, why substances change phase, and how molecules move within substances.
Mrs. Boyles' and Mrs. Lambert's students have completed their Digital Learning Project, Element Super Heros. Each student researched the characteristics of an element of their choice and then formed an "Avenger Super Hero Team" with other students. They also developed fictional character traits for their Super Heros and created a trading card with an illustration, factual information and a short biography.
For the second term students will be studying Forces and Energy. We will be starting out with a review of energy and cycles in nature from 6th grade.
Mrs. Ivey's students have completed their Genetics Digital Learning Project. Each group of students created an instructional video to explain how traits are passed from parents to offspring and how parents can predict the probability of certain traits showing up their offspring using Punnett squares. Students analyzed their own traits and created an avatar clone of themselves. Using this clone, they created individual video projects to demonstrate what their traits are and how the could have inherited those traits from their parents using Punnett squares. These 2 video projects will be taken on with them to their language arts classes where they will study the "nurture" side of what makes them who they are.
Wow, hard to believe the first term is over already. Students have been working hard!
Check out this link to PBS Learning! There are some great activities to support what your children are doing in school. The site is divided up by grade level and math topics. http://mpt.pbslearningmedia.org/collection/mathcore/
6th Grade students are currently working with Integers and absolute value. Students will develop an understanding within real-world context of positive and negative numbers.
7th Grade students are learning all about rational numbers. They are working hard to understand the adding and subtracting rules for negative number, as well as learning the properties of operations.
7th Accelerated - Students will be completing the Expressions & Equations unit and begin working on the Ratios & Proportions unit. Students will be learning how to represent proportional relationships on a graph and by equations.
8th Grade students are continuing to work on the Expressions & Equations unit. They are learning about the relationship of linear functions and comparing properties of a function.
Algebra I students will be finishing up the unit on linear and non-linear two variable functions. Also please make sure your students are using their graphing calculators. We know this is a big investment but this calculator will be used throughout all their high school math courses. We have graphing calculators for students to use if you prefer they not carry them back and forth to school.
