News from the Office
On behalf of the entire staff, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate your child on their upcoming completion of the 2022-23 school year. In celebration of the end of the year, we have arranged several incentive and celebratory activities. Most of these events are for our graduating 8th grade class; however, we will have our traditional end of the year school carnival for all grade levels.
The New Market Middle School Carnival is an incentive-driven event that will take place on Thursday, May 25th. The carnival includes games, activities, food and prizes. Students who earn the incentive will enjoy VIP access to the carnival. These students will be recognized for their positive behavior with early admittance to the carnival. They will have an opportunity to visit food stands and enjoy activities 30 minutes before other students are permitted to attend. In addition, our staff will be recognizing positive behaviors on a daily basis by giving students red carnival tickets. The more tickets students earn, the more food and fun they can “purchase” at the carnival. In order to earn the VIP access, students may not receive a referral between Monday, April 24th and Wednesday, May 24th. If a student receives a referral that results in administrative disciplinary consequences(i.e detention, In-School Suspension, Suspension, etc), they will lose 30 minutes of their carnival time. Any subsequent referrals would cause additional 30 minute restrictions from the carnival.
In addition to our school carnival, we have three special events planned for our 8th graders. On Friday, May 12th, we will hold our 8th Grade Celebration Dance. Students must be in attendance at school the day of the dance. An absence or suspension from school will forfeit admission to the dance. The dance is a privilege extended to all 8th grade students. Any inappropriate behavior or disregard of school rules will result in immediate removal from the dance. More details regarding tickets, dress code, etc are forthcoming and a permission slip will be sent home soon. This information will also be reviewed with students during a presentation in social students classes next week.
On the morning of Wednesday, May 31st, NMMS will host our 8th Grade Awards Ceremony. If your child is receiving an award, you will receive a mailed invitation to attend. We will be recognizing students with Honor Roll all four terms, students with Straight A’s all four terms, students with Straight A’s all three years of middle school, and Service Learning. We look forward to celebrating these successes with you and your child.
On the last day of school, Friday, June 2nd, we will hold our annual 8th Grade Picnic and Slide Show. Our 8th graders will enjoy an extended outdoor lunch with pizza and snacks before heading into the cafeteria for a slide show presentation celebrating their time at New Market Middle.
It is our sincere hope that all students are able to enjoy their end of the year activities, and we are looking forward to helping our students leave NMMS with a successful year behind them.
For your planning purposes, please note the following end of the year activities:

Are you the parent of a current eighth-grade student that is planning to join the Linganore High School band or color guard programs next year?
If so, please plan to join members of the LHS Band Boosters for an important informational session on Monday, May 15th from 7-8 PM at Linganore High School (room D113)!
We will review critical details about the commitments you'll be making as a new band family, and we can answer any questions you may have as a new band parent. We'll also have a limited selection of LHS Band merchandise available for sale as well.
A flyer for this event is available at this link.
Note that this overlaps the tail end of the new LHS band student orientation that day (from 5:30-8:00 PM at LHS). We'll make sure to wrap this up in time to pick up students after that event.
Feel free to contact Steve Granger (2023-2024 LHS Band Booster President) at stevegranger@linganoreband.org with any questions.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Congratulations to our amazing art students!
Their artwork was selected in an advertising contest and will be featured in a special publication of the Frederick News Post called Design an Ad.
The following students will have their artwork published in the newspaper on Wednesday, May 3:
Simone Good
Gwen Corpora
Isla Higgins
Maggie Stains
To welcome Earth Day, NMMS is looking for creative ways our community reduces, reuses, and recycles. Students are encouraged to enter two contests that focus on these topics. Students can enter one or both contests.
The first contest is to photograph or record unique ways you recycle in your home or community. This could be anything from using food scraps in compost to upcycling broken teapots into flower planters.
The second contest is for the most creative artistic piece made of primarily recycled materials. Information on how to enter as well as the introduction video shown to students can be found linked below!
All entries are due by end of day on April 28th, 2023.
Please send any and all questions to Michael Keen at michael.keen@fcps.org
