Message from Mrs. Anderson
It is with bittersweet emotions that I am announcing my retirement on January 1, 2020. After 30 years of teaching art and being a school counselor, I’m ready to move on. I will miss seeing the students, colleagues and families I’ve had the pleasure to work with. Please rest assured that the students will be taken care of. My caseload will be divided by the other two very capable counselors, Mrs. Storey and Mrs. Preudhomme, until my position is filled.
I’m looking forward to spending more time with my family and teaching art classes for adults with disabilities at FCC. But, as I tell my students to follow their dreams, I plan on following mine and look forward to painting landscapes. I always said that I want to be a painter when I grow up! I guess I’m finally grown up! ?? I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday and wish everyone the best in the New Year!

SGA News
HOLIDAY SPIRIT DAY Friday December 20th
SGA is sponsoring Holiday Out on 12/20. Plan to wear anything holiday related including ugly sweaters, festive socks, holiday headgear etc.
The SGA wishes everyone a happy and blessed winter break!
SGA students recently wrote holiday cards to send to military service members stationed overseas. This event was coordinated by Ms. Mossburg and will be taking cards to the Chaplain at Fort Detrick who will then mail them to deployed. troops
SIx of our SGA student leaders attended the FCASC General Assembly meeting on Tuesday December 10th at the Central Office Board Room. Students had a chance to listen to speeches from high school students who are running for the position of Student Member of the Board of Education for 2020-2021. Students enjoyed listening to Dr Alban present the calendar options for next year and giving their input on their choices. Dr Alban also discussed budget constraints and how it affects many decisions in our school system such as shortening the walking distances to school, the possibility of later start times for high school, enacting more environmentally friendly food service products and many other interesting topics. It was in interesting and engaging meeting for all who attended!
Students who represented NMMS were Gavin Perrone, Lindsey Blum, Andrea Dechosa, Reagan OBrien, Abby Myers and Hannah Zirk.

Helping Kids with Cliques
What's a Clique?
Friendship is an important part of kids' development. Having friends helps them be independent beyond the family and prepares them for the mutual, trusting relationships we hope they'll establish as adults.
Groups of friends are different from cliques in some important ways.
Kids in cliques often worry about whether they'll still be popular or whether they'll be dropped for doing or saying the wrong thing or for not dressing in a certain way. This can create a lot of pressure.
How Can Parents Help?
As kids navigate friendships and cliques, there's plenty parents can do to offer support. If your child seems upset, or suddenly spends time alone when usually very social, ask about it.
Encouraging Healthy Friendships
Here are some ways to encourage kids to have healthy friendships and not get too caught up in cliques:
Remember to provide the big-picture perspective too. As hard as cliques might be to deal with now, things can change quickly. What's more important is making true friends — people they can confide in, laugh with, and trust. And the real secret to being "popular" — in the truest sense of the word — is for them to be the kind of friend they'd like to have: respectful, fair, supportive, caring, trustworthy, and kind.
