Hello NFES families,
The school staff will be coordinating pick up of student belongings through the car rider loop the week of June 8th with all social distancing rules applied and a controlled timing in order to eliminate any crowds. Families who have a specific need will also be able to call the front office to make an appointment but no students/families will be allowed to enter the building as we close out this school year. More details will come in our Find Out Firsts. All media/library books will need to be returned the week of June 8th when students pick up materials. We will also celebrate our fifth graders virtually through Google Meet sessions helped by their teachers at the end of the year and will mail home their certificates with their report cards. We do expect to host virtual summer school in July and will be sending letters to those invited. Students who have a Chromebook on loan but will be returning to NFES in the fall will be able to keep it on loan for the summer. Thank you for your patience as we continue to navigate our state and county expectations. We are here to help you so please continue to reach out!

We have successfully kicked off our first week of synchronous learning and virtual class meetings. It has been so wonderful seeing everyone as they pop in, see their peers and share what they've been doing at home. We love seeing pictures of pets, gardens etc. and seeing some of our students on the morning announcements. We cannot thank you enough for helping your child work through their assignments and navigate virtual learning. You are the heroes at home and we could not do this without you! A reminder to please e-mail your classroom teacher giving your child permission to join our virtual meetings if you'd like them to participate. Addressing Children’s Fears
1. Answer questions about the pandemic simply & honestly. Talk with children about any frightening news ?they hear. It is OK to say people are getting sick, but say following rules like washing hands and staying home will help your family stay healthy.
2. Recognize your child's feelings. Calmly say, for example, “I can see that you are upset because you can't have your friends over." Guiding questions can help older children and teens work through issues. (“I know it is disappointing not to be able to hang with your friends right now. How do you think you can stay in touch with them?")
3. Keep in touch with loved ones. Children may also worry about a grandparent who is living alone or a relative or friend with an increased risk of getting COVID-19. Video chats can help ease their anxiety.
4. Model how to manage feelings. Talk through how you are managing your own feelings. (“I am worried about Grandma since I can't go visit her. The best I can do is to check in with her more often by phone. I will put a reminder on my phone to call her in the morning and the afternoon until this outbreak ends.")
5. Tell your child before you leave the house for work or essential errands. In a calm and reassuring voice, tell them where you are going, how long you will be gone, when you will return, and that you are taking steps to stay safe.
6. Look forward. Tell them that scientists are working hard to figure out how to help people who get ill, and that things will get better.
7. Provide extra love. Offer extra hugs and say “I love you" more often.

Counselor's Corner-
Dear North Frederick Families,
One of the leading contributors to childhood depression, anxiety and general mood fluctuations is Cyberbullying. With lots of time available, and limited opportunities to go outside during these stay home, stay safe days, children are turning to the internet to socialize. Socializing may include, Online gaming, email, text message, instagram, facebook, Tick Tock, Houseparty, or any of the many social media outlets available. Please take some time to look over the information below to help you navigate through information you’ll need to keep your child safe and to gain some available resources. .
