Dear Parents,
I am pleased to announce that our school will be using new reading materials called Phonics Suite in Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2. These materials are designed to improve students' understanding of foundational reading skills, including phonics. These materials will be used in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade, and will be one part of your child's overall reading program. Students will still have small group instruction, be exposed to literature, and build oral language skills.
Our teachers have recently been trained in the use of these classroom materials. Each student will receive a student book to practice the skills they have been learning. Our teachers will be using multisensory materials to better build students’ understanding of critical reading skills.
You may notice that some phonics skills in the program may have already been introduced earlier in the school year. The Phonics Suite programs are designed to be very systematic and explicit and this will build students’ mastery of these important reading skills.
We look forward to seeing our students grow and learn!
Sincerely
Mrs. Seiss
School closings or delays due to inclement weather can be found in multiple ways- 1) FCPS will send out a Find Out First with the information as early as possible, 2) you can check on www.FCPS.org, 3) TV and local radio stations. We respectfully request that you use these ways to be informed. The school front office is not informed sooner than Find Out First and at times struggles handling the volume of calls with weather questions. Thank you for your help!

NFES school-wide “Community Service Awareness Project”
We are pleased to inform you that our NFES school-wide “Community Service Awareness Project” is developing into a school culture of volunteerism and an opportunity for leadership. This kindness project has been a successful addition to our school’s citizenship program for the past 5 years and one that we hope your child gets involved. At North Frederick we encourage all students to contribute to and make a difference in our school, community, country and internationally by being life long active participants through community service.
The “Community Service Awareness Project’s” main goal is to teach every child the importance of service, and to build awareness that there are many ways to contribute and ultimately improve our community. Parents/Guardians must provide the necessary guidance outside of school when your child is involved in the community service project you select together. Your child’s safety is most important. We ask that you do not allow your child to solicit door to door or do anything outside of your supervision.
More information about this program can be found in the links below and in next week's Thursday folder. As always, feel free to stop by or call me with questions regarding this program.

Did you know that Mindfulness can help your child with self-regulation in the classroom and at home?
Mindfulness can help students manage stress, regulate their emotions, and focus their attention so they can be available for academic, social, and emotional learning (SEL). Several evidence-based SEL programs have already begun incorporating mindfulness into their programming.
Why Is Mindfulness Needed in Schools?
Today’s educators and students carry so much on their shoulders. Meeting academic and social expectations – and simply growing up and developing a sense of self and belonging – can be tough. Yet the pressures in today’s educational environment reach far beyond these basics. Our world is moving and changing faster than ever. We need a response that addresses the overall health and sustainability of learning environments and supports the well-being of every educator, student, and member of the school community.
Students Face New Challenges
* Anxiety
Nearly 1 in 3 adolescents will meet criteria for an anxiety disorder by the age of 18.
* Trauma
46% of all children in the U.S. have experienced at least one adverse childhood experience (ACE).
* Distraction
On average, U.S. children spend 9 hours a day on digital entertainment, excluding school work.
An increasing number of today’s students face challenges that affect their ability to focus attention, regulate difficult emotions, build inner resilience, and form healthy and supportive relationships. In response, we need to learn effective ways to help calm our students’ anxious nervous systems while providing them with supportive relationships, nurturing experiences, and positive learning environments.
