Juniors participated in mock interviews on Thursday. They commented on the positive experience and looked really good all dressed up! Thank you to all the business leaders, that included several Lancer parents that took time out of their day to conduct the interviews. We greatly appreciate you volunteering your time and giving our students this valuable experience.
Congratulations to Sarah Buckley who will be representing FCPS as a student page to the 2019 legislative session of the Maryland General Assembly.
ECigs During the 2017-18 school year, Linganore students received 77 referrals for tobacco-related offenses, most of which involved electronic cigarettes. Some students have shared that their parents are fine with them vaping “because it’s safe”, but that simply is not accurate. One component of our School Improvement Plan for this year is to better educate our students and their families on the dangers of vaping.
On September 18, 2018, the Surgeon General issued the following statement: “Though we’ve made tremendous progress since the first Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health in 1964, recent data on youth e-cigarette use are alarming. In 2017, 2.1 million middle and high school students currently used e-cigarettes, making them the most commonly used tobacco product among youth. These numbers highlight the urgent need for a targeted campaign to educate youth about the dangers of e-cigarette use, and stop the flood of youth initiation. Today’s launch of the FDA’s new “The Real Cost” Youth E-Cigarette Prevention Campaign (https://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm620788.htm) is a critically important effort coming at a pivotal time. Simply put, no youth should EVER use e-cigarettes.”
What can you do? First, get the facts, some of which we’re providing here. Second, have conversations with your children reinforcing the Surgeon General’s message that “no youth should EVER use e-cigarettes.” You have significant influence over the decisions your children make. If you’re not sure how to begin a conversation on this topic, consider reviewing this Tip Sheet for Parents provided by the Surgeon General: https://e-cigarettes.surgeongeneral.gov/documents/SGR_ECig_ParentTipSheet_508.pdf.
