From Principal Hanlon

Dear Lancer Families,

As we begin our new semester, it is important to refresh our understanding of how to ensure a safe and smooth arrival and dismissal process for our car riders, bus riders, and student drivers, as well as our policy regarding late arrivals to school.

Morning Drop Off:
Car riders are to be dropped off at the front entrance of the school beginning at 7:00 am. No cars should be pulling into parking spaces, using the bus lot, or dropping off in the stadium lot. The best time for no wait is 7:00 - 7:15 am. Cars are to pull around the perimeter of the lot, drop off at the front entrance, and proceed to the stop sign, where a right turn must be made to exit our campus at the stadium lot entrance. This process has been reviewed by our FCPS Transportation Department, Facilities, and our law enforcement partners, and is the best way to ensure everyone’s safety.

Late Arrivals:
When students arrive late they check in through the attendance office. There is a table set up in the hall in front of the attendance office to allow more staff to write passes so the students are able to check in and move to class more quickly. Students should advise staff of the reason for the late arrival, such as lack of bus transportation, illness, or otherwise. Late arrivals which are not excused for valid reasons will be subject to our tiered system of consequences:

1st and 2nd unexcused lates: Warning
3rd and 4th unexcused lates: Lunch detention
5th and 6th unexcused lates: After School detention
7th and 8th unexcused lates: Parent - student - administrator conference for determination of next steps; student drivers lose parking privileges

When students are late to school, they are missing instructional time in their first block classes. Missing time over the course of a term can really add up for students as they miss out on their teacher’s announcements, directions, and warm ups in first block. Remember, classes begin at 7:30 am and the optimal time to drop off with little to no line of cars is 7:00 - 7:15 am.

Dismissal:
Students are dismissed from the school day at 2:15 pm. Best time for little to no wait is 2:30 - 2:45. Car riders should be picked up using the same route through the front lot as for arrivals - enter and pull around the perimeter of the lot to pick up your student at the entrance. No cars should be parking on Old Annapolis Road, nor should anyone be making illegal u-turns on Old Annapolis Road. This is unsafe and illegal, and drivers are subject to citation by law enforcement.

Thank you for your continued partnership with us in your students’ safety and success in school.

Sincerely,
Cindy Hanlon

News From the Office

LHS Unified Bocce Ball Team - Awarded the Gold Medal

Congratulations to Lindsey Blum, Lexi Crosby, Caitlyn Crosby, Grace Doy, Teia Lutman, Noah Nozal and Alina Partch for bringing home the Gold medal at the county Unified Bocce Ball Tournament on Wednesday! Way to go Lancers!

Mock Trial Team

Our first match was last week and we beat TJ by 12 points!  Unfortunately spectators are limited this year due to COVID so we can't invite you to come watch but we will keep you updated on our progress.  The civil case this year is a negligence action based around the site of the movie "The Blair Witch Project."  A teenager fell to his death going into the basement of the cabin where the final scene was filmed and the issue is whether the owner of the property was negligent or the teen assumed the risk of injury as a trespasser.  It was a really interesting case!

Plaintiff Team:
Lawyers - Chloe Trevino, Zoe Theologou, and Casey Landahl
Witnesses - Elaine Escamilla, Tom Olumide-Onabanjo, and Abbey Landahl
Shadows: Jeff Joyal and Jack Winkler

Defense Team:
Lawyers - Ben Conway, Tatum Pugh, and Ashley Alt
Witnesses - Spencer McKinstry, Angela DeLaCruz, and Taylor Gepes Carroll
Shadows: Hunter Hall, Marcia Nunez Delgado and Mariana Berrios

Academic Tournament

On Friday, January 14, the LHS Academic Team competed in their first match of the season and pulled of a come from behind victory over both Tuscarora and Middletown. These students demonstrated an amazing range of knowledge by answering questions from all areas of academia, pop trivia, and current events with correct answers ranging from Vietnam to Don Quixote, A Streetcar Named Desire to the Arctic Circle, the New York Yankees to manatees, and believe it or not, "pants".

Congratulations to the following students who competed this weekend.

Vote for Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB)

Each year the students of FCPS select a representative to serve as the Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB).  The selected student is the voice of all students in FCPS on the Board.  The voting poll is open now through 4 pm on Thursday, January 27th to select the SMOB for the 2022-2023 school year.  All LHS students are eligible to cast a vote.  Students must be signed into their FCPS account to access the Voting Ballot.  On Thursday, February 3rd, the FCASC General Assembly will make the vote official through its Electoral College system.

There are 5 candidates from schools across the county.  Their speeches and candidate information are available on the FCPS SMOB Webpage.  The voting link can also be found on the FCPS webpage.
