As we develop our competency-based approach at FHS, a few parents have asked, “Why are we moving in this direction?” As I have noted in the past few newsletters, one component of LYNX is “Innovative Learning.” We have many high-achieving students who benefit from pathways and advanced opportunities, such as AP and dual enrollment course work. But we also have academic achievement concerns at FHS that need to be addressed. Not only do we need to help all students meet minimum standards, we need to be doing a better job preparing all students for rigorous coursework and providing them opportunities to go further once they get there. Simply doing the same thing we have always done does not meet the needs of the wide range of learners in our school community, which includes 1400+ families.
In a competency-based system, there are more opportunities for teachers to give meaningful feedback to students. Teachers use rubrics (that have been developed by FHS teachers and FCPS curriculum staff) that give students at all levels more feedback and directly shows them how they can improve. Students also have a clearer vision of what is expected from them when the learning task begins.
In a competency-based system, all students are always encouraged to do their best work on their first attempt. Students who master on their first attempt have opportunities to pursue deeper, more advanced learning. Yet a competency-based system also permits students to keep trying if they don’t master a concept the first time. By allowing more feedback before the summative (final) assessment, students have more opportunities to work with the material and, by allowing students to reassess on certain material, we are giving students the chance to go back and get it right before they move on to the next topic. We are moving away from a system where students just get “one shot” at showing they can do something, and then move on whether they master it or not. Students at FHS are encouraged to “do their best work the first time” knowing that we also value growth, improvement, and learning.
I try not to use a lot of “education speak” when I write to you in our weekly newsletter. Sometimes, as educators, we get caught up in our own world and don’t remember not everyone instantly knows all the acronyms and technical terms that we use in the profession. However, I would like to share a brief article on what researchers have said about the system we are trying to adapt for FHS. Please click here for the link.
I hope you and your family have a restful spring break!
