Greetings –
Next week the third term will end on April 4th. If you haven’t already please review your students HAC or Schoology grade report and make sure that all assignments have been turned in. As a reminder, we have tutoring available to all students in our learning lab every day from 2:20-3:40. There are additional sessions on Tues, Wed and Thurs from 3:45-4:15. Bus transportation and a free dinner is available to all students that stay after for learning lab.
Last week I referenced a chart that summarizes our vision for Competency Based Education (CBE). An important first step in the CBE cycle is “learn”. Simply stated, “what a student learns is clear, simply stated, and students have a choice”. In a CBE environment teachers should be clear with students about not only what the classroom objectives are, but also why the objectives are important and what a clear picture of “mastery” will look like at the end of the lesson. Traditionally a teacher may have posted on the board “students will be able to……” and briefly go over what the students should be able to do. In a CBE environment we are asking teachers to be even more explicit and give students clearer examples of what success looks like.
We are not replacing any instructional methods at Frederick High School! You can still walk into a classroom and see examples of lectures, worksheets, or teacher lead discussions (just to name a few). We are however, working with teachers to add additional methods (such as blended learning) that will let teachers offer more choice to students and differentiate the level of instruction across the classroom. We are blessed at Frederick High to have one of the most updated technology plans in the county (if not the state). We are working with teachers to show how technology can be used to ENHANCE a lesson, not replace the important human interaction aspect that good teaching provides on a daily basis.
We want our students to be able to leave Frederick High School in four years with the ability to use what they have learned in new or different situations.
David Franceschina, Ed.D.
Principal, FHS
