American Legion Oratorical Contest
Due to the pandemic, this year's WJZ Black History Oratory Competition will be conducted entirely online, but now more than ever, we need our students to speak up and speak out about the issues that matter.
High School Students write an original essay (600 words or less) based on a quote by a prominent African American historical figure.
The students with the highest-scored essays will be invited to record themselves performing their original speeches at home to compete for scholarship prize money.
The top speeches will be broadcast on WJZ News, and for the first time in BHOC history, the winners will be announced on TV!
Stay tuned for this year’s quotes! Essays will be due January 31st.

Frederick County Public Schools staff is providing live virtual instruction as an important part of the Full Virtual Model of instruction. In the event that students are unable to attend live virtual instruction via Google Meet, these sessions or part of these sessions will be video and audio recorded. The recorded session will be available for students who would like to review that content and instruction. We are balancing student privacy and the need for flexibility during this unprecedented pandemic.
Please review this parent Guide to help understand how Google Meet recordings will be used in instruction and security safeguards in place to protect student privacy.
Parent permission is required for teachers to record your students in the Google Meets. Teachers may begin recording beginning the week of September 8, 2002. Please let the school know whether or not your student has permission to be recorded in Google Meets. (Google Meet/Student Privacy and Security)
Students without permission will be asked to turn off their cameras and audio during the recorded portion of the lesson. Our goal is to get this additional resource online and available to students as soon as possible.
If Parents/Students and Remote Staff require Technical Support for Chromebooks or Laptops, please send an e-mail to Nick.Ribecca@fcps.org to arrange for a time to meet here at FHS.

How to Apply to Attend the FCPS Career and Technology Center (CTC)
The Career and Technology Center (CTC) is part of the Frederick County Public Schools system. With more than 24 programs to choose from, students have the opportunity to gain college and career experience in a variety of areas. They can earn college credits as well as valuable industry certifications and licenses through a CTC program. CTC programs are taught in half-day blocks, and students attend their high school for the other half of the school day.
Shadowing a CTC program is the first step in the application process and is open to students in grades 9-11. Interested students should sign up for shadowing now by going to this link or visiting the www.careertech.net Admissions tab and filling out the online request for a virtual shadow form.
Shadowing runs Thursday, November 12 through Friday, February 26. Once a shadow date is scheduled, students will receive an email to their my.fcps.org email account informing them of the date and time of their virtual shadow and providing the Google Meet link needed for their virtual shadow experience. A student may shadow and apply to up to two programs. On the day of their virtual shadow, students will log on at the designated time to the Google Meet session provided from their my.fcps.org account. A brief orientation will be provided to all students shadowing before they move into their program's virtual shadow experience.
During the virtual shadow students can expect to meet with the instructor, other students interested in the program, and possibly current students. Students will be able to ask questions about the program and hear the instructor's expectations.
Instructors will evaluate students during their virtual shadow on their enthusiasm and attitude, how well they follow directions, and their participation in the virtual shadow. In addition to the virtual shadow evaluation, attendance and GPA are also considered for acceptance into a CTC program.
