Good Afternoon –
As you will see in this week’s messenger, there is a lot going on at Frederick High School in the next few weeks. First, and most importantly, there are only two weeks left for the first term. Please review your child’s schoology gradebook and encourage them to turn in any missing assignments. If you have any questions about a student’s academic progress you will see links to email the teacher directly in the schoology classroom. Feel free to reach out to a school counselor or your child’s assistant principal if we can be of any assistance.
Next week is spirit week! We have taken a slightly different approach this year due to our shift to the online environment. While we may not be facing off on the football field yet, Frederick and TJ High school will be engaged in friendly competition all week. I am so proud of our students who have worked with their counterparts at TJ to create competitions that give back to their school and community. Please notice the competition schedule below.
We will also be giving the SAT to any senior that has signed up to take in on Tuesday Oct 27. Ordinarily the school day SAT is offered to juniors in the spring semester. That will still occur for our current juniors this year. The Tuesday SAT is for seniors who did not get to take the test last spring due to the COVID shutdown. If you have any questions about the SAT feel free to reach out to AP Becky Hackett at Rebecca.Hackett@fcps.org.
I hope everyone has a great weekend, and don’t forget to review the spirit week agenda. Get those can goods in so we can be the first school to hit 2021 cans!
Thank You,
David Franceschina, FHS
Principal, FHS

Frederick County Public Schools staff is providing live virtual instruction as an important part of the Full Virtual Model of instruction. In the event that students are unable to attend live virtual instruction via Google Meet, these sessions or part of these sessions will be video and audio recorded. The recorded session will be available for students who would like to review that content and instruction. We are balancing student privacy and the need for flexibility during this unprecedented pandemic.
Please review this parent Guide to help understand how Google Meet recordings will be used in instruction and security safeguards in place to protect student privacy.
Parent permission is required for teachers to record your students in the Google Meets. Teachers may begin recording beginning the week of September 8, 2002. Please let the school know whether or not your student has permission to be recorded in Google Meets. (Google Meet/Student Privacy and Security)
Students without permission will be asked to turn off their cameras and audio during the recorded portion of the lesson. Our goal is to get this additional resource online and available to students as soon as possible.
If Parents/Students and Remote Staff require Technical Support for Chromebooks or Laptops, please send an e-mail to Nick.Ribecca@fcps.org to arrange for a time to meet here at FHS.

We kept this week's question open ended.....open ended questions can lead to a lot of creativity. Our question is: "Did you know...."
Mr. Brown: Did you know that Pterodactyls were actually not Dinosaurs? I honestly don't know if this is common knowledge or not, I know a lot of random dinosaur facts ??
Mr. Cleary: Did you know, Lady Liberty wears a size 879 shoe.
Mrs. Cramer: I want to run a race in every state, so far I have run in 19.
Ms. Hale: Did you know that one of the most successful pirates in world history was a Chinese woman named Ching Shih? The Qing government is said to have pardoned her just to get her off the high seas.
Ms. Ketrow: Did you know that a cat was the mayor of a town in Alaska for 20 years?
Miss Kidd: Did you know that Ms. Kidd had a golden retriever who lived to be 17 years old?! That's like a dinosaur in dog years!
Mrs. McGrew: Did you know that Bloodhounds "smell with their ears"? Their long, drooping ears help collect scent from the air and keep it near their face and nose.
Mrs. Pfeil: Did you know James Madison was only 3 inches taller than Mrs. Pfeil?
Miss Pompe: Did you know my grandfather is a famous rocket scientist? He helped build Ranger 7. There’s a replica hanging in the Air & Space Museum in DC and he was on the cover of a magazine in the 60s. He actually carved his initials into it right before they launched it. AND....Did you know Abraham Lincoln was honored by the Wrestling Hall of Fame?
Mr. Smith: Did you know the blob of toothpaste on your toothbrush has a name? It's called a "nurdle"
Mrs. Strakonsky: Did you know that I am actually shy in crowds; AND The first known use of the term “OMG” was in a letter to Winston Churchill. A letter published by the US Library of Congress from Admiral John Arbuthnot “Jacky” Fisher to Churchill sent in 1917 contains the phrase.
There is an app for everything nowadays including solving procedural math problems such as this. Photomath and similar applications have become extremely popular and can be a great tool to helps students check answers while working to learn a concept. However, Photomath cannot replace the conceptual understanding that students need to build their problem solving skills. While some math problems do have "right answers," we want to develop your student's ability to communicate and reason mathematically beyond arriving at a single right answer. In fact, research has shown that students learn more from their mistakes than arriving at the correct answer the first time.
Additionally, Photomath uses notation and methods that may not be course level appropriate to your students current math level. Students may become more confused when complex methods are shown that are not taught in their class. Students who turn in photomathed problems are plagiarizing as defined by FCPS as "deliberately presenting work, words, ideas, theories, etc. derived in whole or in part from a source external to the student as though they are the student’s own efforts." While Photomath can be a helpful tool when used appropriately, it can be detrimental to the learning and understanding of mathematics as students work to prepare for state exams and future courses.
Please reach out to your student's math teacher if you have any questions or concerns. You may also contact Leslie Byrd, math specialist, at leslie.byrd@fcps.org or at 240-397-9718 if you have any questions or concerns about your student's math progress.
