Frederick County Public Schools staff is providing live virtual instruction as an important part of the Full Virtual Model of instruction. In the event that students are unable to attend live virtual instruction via Google Meet, these sessions or part of these sessions will be video and audio recorded. The recorded session will be available for students who would like to review that content and instruction. We are balancing student privacy and the need for flexibility during this unprecedented pandemic.
Please review this parent Guide to help understand how Google Meet recordings will be used in instruction and security safeguards in place to protect student privacy.
Parent permission is required for teachers to record your students in the Google Meets. Teachers may begin recording beginning the week of September 8, 2002. Please let the school know whether or not your student has permission to be recorded in Google Meets. (Google Meet/Student Privacy and Security)

There is an app for everything nowadays including solving procedural math problems such as this. Photomath and similar applications have become extremely popular and can be a great tool to helps students check answers while working to learn a concept. However, Photomath cannot replace the conceptual understanding that students need to build their problem solving skills. While some math problems do have "right answers," we want to develop your student's ability to communicate and reason mathematically beyond arriving at a single right answer. In fact, research has shown that students learn more from their mistakes than arriving at the correct answer the first time.
Additionally, Photomath uses notation and methods that may not be course level appropriate to your students current math level. Students may become more confused when complex methods are shown that are not taught in their class. Students who turn in photomathed problems are plagiarizing as defined by FCPS as "deliberately presenting work, words, ideas, theories, etc. derived in whole or in part from a source external to the student as though they are the student’s own efforts." While Photomath can be a helpful tool when used appropriately, it can be detrimental to the learning and understanding of mathematics as students work to prepare for state exams and future courses.
Please reach out to your student's math teacher if you have any questions or concerns. You may also contact Leslie Byrd, math specialist, at leslie.byrd@fcps.org or at 240-397-9718 if you have any questions or concerns about your student's math progress.

This week we are making a stop in Vietnam for their traditional Banh Mi. You can make this as spicy or mild as you would like. The recipe comes from VietWorldKitchen.com.
Banh Mi Sandwich
For each sandwich:
1. Slit the bread lengthwise, and then use your fingers or a bread knife to hollow out the insides, making a trough in both halves. Discard the insides or save it for another use, such as breadcrumbs. If necessary, crisp up the bread in a toaster oven preheated to 325ºF, and then let it cool for a minute before proceeding.
2. Generously spreading the inside with mayonnaise. Drizzle in some Maggi Seasoning sauce or soy sauce. Start from the bottom portion of bread to layer in the remaining ingredients. (As with all sandwiches, you’ll eventually develop an order for layering the filling so as to maximize the interaction between flavors and textures.) Close the sandwich, cut it in half crosswise for easy eating, and enjoy.
Do you have a family recipe from your home country you want to share? If so, send an email to elizabeth.oneal@fcps.org and you could be featured in the next Cadet Messenger!
