Good Afternoon Cadet Families –
With week three behind us, now is an excellent time to sit down with your students and review their grades and progress in their coursework. Students (and parents) can sign into schoology and see the academic progress they have made during the past three weeks. If you need assistance signing into Schoology FCPS has created several documents that can help you sign in. They can be found at: Schoology Help. Please contact your classroom teacher if you have any questions about grades or assignments.
Today via Find-Out-First an important parent survey went out that asks questions about your satisfaction with distant learning and also asks a few questions about your preferences in a return to face-to-face instruction. If you missed the Find-Out-First you can access the survey at: Survey Monkey.
I wanted to share an update on our yearly academic awards ceremony. After listening to parent feedback, we have decided to postpone our annual academic awards ceremony that celebrates the academic achievements of students in the previous school year to the second semester in hopes of being able to hold a face-to-face awards ceremony. Should conditions not permit for a face-to-face ceremony in the second semester we will switch to an online format. We felt it important to at least try to hold a face-to-face celebration before moving to a pure online presentation.
Finally, as a reminder next Friday the 25th is no longer a day off for students and staff as the Board of Education determined it would now be an instructional day due to the cancellation of the Great Frederick Fair. I hope everyone has a great weekend and to everyone celebrating Rosh Hashanah I wish you and your family a Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
David Franceschina, Ed.D. Principla, FHS

Frederick County Public Schools staff is providing live virtual instruction as an important part of the Full Virtual Model of instruction. In the event that students are unable to attend live virtual instruction via Google Meet, these sessions or part of these sessions will be video and audio recorded. The recorded session will be available for students who would like to review that content and instruction. We are balancing student privacy and the need for flexibility during this unprecedented pandemic.
Please review this parent Guide to help understand how Google Meet recordings will be used in instruction and security safeguards in place to protect student privacy.
Parent permission is required for teachers to record your students in the Google Meets. Teachers may begin recording beginning the week of September 8, 2002. Please let the school know whether or not your student has permission to be recorded in Google Meets. (Google Meet/Student Privacy and Security)
Students without permission will be asked to turn off their cameras and audio during the recorded portion of the lesson. Our goal is to get this additional resource online and available to students as soon as possible.
National Honor Society will mail application invitations to all eligible students during the week of October 5.
Juniors and seniors with cumulative weighted GPAs of 3.5 and higher will be invited to apply. Applications will be due Wednesday, October 21, and decisions will be sent to students no later than October 30. Please contact Mr. Burroughs (william.burroughs@fcps.org) or Mrs. McCarrick (andrea.mccarrick@fcps.org) with further questions.

Ms. Stup: Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo Ms. Newmeyer: Monster by Walter Dean Myers and The Pianist by Wladyslaw Szpilman Ms. Dlugos: Fearless: The Undaunted Courage and Ultimate Sacrifice of Navy Seal Team Six Operator Adam Brown Ms. Matheny: Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty Ms. Diaz: Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia Ms. Tongyai: Smoke in the Sun by Renee Ahdieh
This week, the Social Studies Department would like to share with you what our favorite genres of music are and why. What are yours? Would you listen to our playlists? Would we listen to yours?
Ms. Kidd: I really enjoy listening to jazz from the 30s and 40s when I am at home relaxing or playing with my puppies, but I also love listening to early 2000s Hip Hop & R&B because it reminds me of high school and college and is great driving music. :)
Mrs. Pfeil: Favorite music genre for me is 1990’s grunge because it reminds me of my college years.
Mrs. McGrew: I like all genres. There is a song for every mood and occasion.
Mrs. Cramer: Country
Mr. Cleary: Favorite genre would have to be, right now, bluegrass. Specifically jam style bands like Greensky Bluegrass who have been influenced by the Grateful Dead. Their music is a great way for me to relax, live music.
Mr. Smith: Rock and Roll, because it's got a good beat and there's lots of variations to choose from.
Mr. Brown: I believe my favorite genre at this moment is hip hop / rap. I think there is so much innovation in the genre, and there are a lot of important voices speaking through their art.
Ms Pompe: My favorite genre of music is definitely country music. It reminds me of cleaning the house on Saturday mornings with my family when I was younger and is perfect to listen to with the windows down!
Mrs. Strakonsky: Jazz....traditional and smooth.........I can be high stress, but jazz can calm me down
Ms. Ketrow: Swing and big band because it is great to dance to.
Ms. Hale: I do not have a favorite genre. I change the music based on my mood. ??
