Greetings from Frederick HS –
We made it to May! It’s hard to believe there is a little more than a month left in the school year. We anxiously wait to hear when the last day for seniors will be along with the last day of the school year for the rest of our students. FCPS, much like the rest of our state, is making decisions based on the guidance our Health Department as well as Gov. Hogan. As soon as we know what these two important dates are we will let you know immediately.
Until then, it is important that all students keep engaging in their coursework. Next Friday will be midterm for Term 4. Thank you to those of you that have been reaching out to teachers to express your desire to earn a letter grade for term 4. Remember that this decision is not required now, you have until five days before the end of the term. We will send out reminders as we get closer to that date for you to make your final decision.
Yearbooks have shipped and we anticipate them arriving to the school sometime after May 15. As soon as we have them we will arrange a pickup time that will accommodate students and families while meeting all the social distancing requirements set out by the health department. As soon as senior caps and gowns arrive we will also schedule a similar pickup event.
Finally, AP testing season is almost upon on. If you have any questions about AP testing, or need assistance accessing the online test please do not hesitate to reach out to AP Aaron Phillips at Aaron.Phillips@fcps.org and he will get you what you need.
Have a great weekend Cadets!
David Franceschina ,Ed.D. Principal, FHS

There are also many historic anniversaries during this month. Take some time, be a historic investigator, and share with your Social Studies teacher what you have discovered about the month of May!

Hola, Bonjour and from the World Language Department!
Here is a favorite cultural tradition from each of your World Language teachers:
"My favorite cultural tradition is the "Fete de la de la Musique", which is the annual music festival that takes place in every city in France on June 21st. There are thousands of free events around the country for the public to get involved in, including choirs, DJ sets, classic music, rock and pop - something to suit all tastes, and EVERYTHING is free. In the past few years, higher profile musicians have offered free concerts on this day as well. There is music in pubs, in the streets, and on balconies. Unfortunately, it will not take place this year because of COVID-19". - Mlle. Bensing
"My favorite cultural tradition is eating la tourtiere, a French-Canadian meat pie served during winter holidays. My grandparents always made it from scratch whenever we celebrated Christmas together". - Srta. Dufresne
"One of my favorite traditions comes from Mexico - it's using cascarones to celebrate (especially around Easter time). A hole is made in the top of the egg shell to drain out the contents (and used) and the remaining shell is washed, stuffed with confetti, and then broken on the head of someone else. It's said to be good luck to get pegged with a cscaron." - Sr. Wade
"There are so many great traditions, it was hard to pick just one! One of my favorites is the "feria de Abril" in Seville, Spain. It takes place every April, and lasts for one week. During that week, family and friends dress in traditional "flamenco-style" outfits, spend time dancing "sevillanas" and hanging out with friends and family in "casetas" (large, decorated tents). They also decorate horses and carriages, and ride down the streets, displaying their beautiful dresses and decorations." - Sr. Lane
"My favorite cultural tradition is the ABC story. Since ASL is not a written language, the culture, history and language are handed down through stories, as they were in hearing culture before written language existed. The tradition of telling a story, but having to follow the rules to create the story using signs in ABC order, is a fun and challenging way to share the nuances of the language and its culture. Often events are held where people are given a topic and have to create a story in just a few minutes while standing in front of an audience! Talk about pressue!". - Ms. DeLameter
Greetings from the Visual and Performing Arts Department
We hope everyone is doing well and not letting time at home take away from using your creative energy to fill your days. Are you tired of the rainy weather or just plain bored? Why not take a virtual tour of one of the many museums around the world? Art lovers can view thousands of paintings, sculptures, installations and artwork online – many in minute detail – as well as explore the museums themselves. There are various platforms from interactive, 360-degree videos and full “walk-around” tours with voiceover descriptions to slideshows with zoomable photos of the world’s greatest artworks. Many allow viewers to get closer to the art than they could in real life. Below is a list of five museums to start exploring. If you like these, there are many other opportunities to explore the world of art without leaving your home.

The PTSA is working hard on these programs.
1) The PTSA continues to collect and make deliveries of toiletry items for FHS families in need. This is the "Care4Kids COVID-19" drive.
Although there are many people in need, we are so amazed at the support and help from our Cadet community. If you are interested in helping, contact us - membersfhs@gmail.com. There are two drop-off locations for donations: 115 Kline Blvd. Frederick, MD 21701 and 2408 Hunters Chase Ct. 21702. If you know of families who need help, direct them to this link - it also contains other resources: Community Needs
2) Dollars For Scholars: Each year the FHS-PTSA awards scholarships to graduates through Dollars For Scholars. The counselors handle the application process for students and they select the award recipients. Students should use this link: Dollars for Scholars Application
3) Your help is needed: The PTSA is raising funds for the Dollars For Scholars. Applications will be reviewed and recipients selected by the FHS counseling team. (The PTSA never sees the applicants names.)
Scholarships are awarded to students who have significantly contributed to the FHS community and show a commitment to not only further their education but also continue to serve their community.
We hope you will consider contributing to this worthy cause and help Frederick High graduates continue to make Frederick a great place to live. Our seniors deserve extra consideration this year as many of the events they hold dear and look forward to are altered by the ongoing school closure. Let’s not let them down!
Giving to Dollars for Scholars gives back!
