We have sent out several important Find-Out-Firsts that talk about the new format AP testing will take this year. Be sure you review those messages (they can be found in the archive section of the FHS Find Out First Page) if you missed them. We have also included information below. If you have any additional questions about AP testing, don’t hesitate to contact AP Aaron Phillips at Aaron.Phillips@fcps.org.
Seniors, we are starting to finalize plans for end of year events that will honor your accomplishments. If you haven’t yet, please look at the Class of 2020 Schoology group page and let me know what you would like to do for Prom. There will 100% be a graduation ceremony and senior awards ceremony for our senior class this year! What that will look like will depend on some decisions that FCPS and the state board of education will have to make, and I am hopeful many of those decisions will be made soon. I know that emotions are high and everyone wants to hear the details for our graduation ceremony. As soon as I have information to share you will be the first to know. Until then, don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions and I’ll do my best to get you the information you are looking for.
Finally, if there is anything FHS can do to assist you or your family during these times please don’t hesitate to contact an administrator or school counselor. We can connect you with several community resources, and our awesome PTSA has done an amazing job collecting items and are ready to assist as needed. All you need to do is ask!
I hope everyone has a restful weekend and I’ll “see” everyone next week!
Sincerely,

Greetings from the Social Studies Department:
This week we encourage you to think about the following:
What Social Science experiments and studies will be conducted as a result of this pandemic? Will you be a part of conducting one of those experiments? Social Science investigations are more than historic records; we ask the "what is going on? Why is it happening? How is it affecting/effecting us? Why do we care?" We look at the historic, economic, political, socio-cultural effects of what is happening. Challenge yourself to come up with at least 2 different thesis/hypothesis as to long term effects of this pandemic.

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at at time.
In this time of Continuity of Learning, you might find yourself struggling with math, Schoology, technology, or balancing all of your coursework. That's okay! Whether people want to admit it or not, everyone is struggling with some aspect of online learning. The work may seem overwhelming at times, but just dive in and do one thing. If you are not sure where to start, message your teacher in Schoology and ask them what is one thing you could work on today. Don't try to tackle everything all at once, but start by making a list of the tasks or assignments that you need to complete. Next, make a schedule for yourself (in writing) to accomplish each task. For example you might write down from 10:00 - 10:30 I am going to watch the online video and take notes. Having a daily schedule will assist you in organizing your time and your thoughts. There are daily schedule examples that can be found online that you can use to help structure your day with both academics, free time, work, and exercise. Remember- just one bite at a time!
Your math teachers are here to support you each and every step of the way so please email or message them in Schoology. You can also contact Leslie Byrd, the math specialist at Leslie.Byrd@fcps.org for assistance.
Hola, Bonjour and from the World Language Department!
Do you have a favorite word in the English language? Maybe it is something inspirational, funny, particularly useful or just has special meaning for you? Well, we wanted to share our favorites in the languages that we teach:
Ah bon? “This is the equivalent of "Really?" and I like it because it is useful in a conversation, especially when learning French. It works well when you can't think of something to say after being told something, but still want to show interest.” -Mlle. Bensing
“One of my favorite Spanish words is “carmesí” (crimson) since I like both the color itself and the way the word sounds. As for French, I like “le papillon” (butterfly); to me it sounds cuter than ‘butterfly.’” - Srta. Dufresne
“One of my favorite words is “cariño” - it's a word that you might use with your significant other like "darling" or "honey" or just generally indicates 'affection'. I love the word cariño because it features the ñ which seems so very "Spanish," and because I have a lot of affection for the Spanish language.” -Sra. Wade
“I really like the word ‘chunches’ in Spanish. This is a colloquial term that is only used in certain Spanish-speaking countries, especially in Central America. We use this word a lot in Costa Rica to talk about “stuff” or “things.” It is especially useful when talking about random bunches of items, or if you can’t remember how to say the name of an item. It’s also just a fun word to say.” -Sra. Lane
”For ASL - let's start with the ILY sign (I LOVE YOU) which is used as a common farewell and signifies the care and concern the ASL community has for each other.” -Ms. DeLameter

“Bring it to life.” Read an article in a book or magazine and draw a comic strip to show what happened in the article. Bring the story to life with images and captions.
Jingle All The Way. Think about something in your home that has been unexpectedly useful while you have been stuck in the house. Write a jingle about the product that could be used in a commercial about this product. BONUS: If you turn it into a short commercial, even better. Maybe a TikTok
Make a table version of a sport, for example, mini-golf, basketball, soccer. Play with a family member. Use recyclable items around your home to create a basket, goal, golf club.

DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS!
Donations Here are three things to know about the PTSA right now!
1) The PTSA has been busy collecting and making deliveries of toiletry items for FHS families in need. We handle the Care4Kids drive each year near the holidays, but we have extended it as the "Care4KidsCOVID-19" drive. Although there are many people in need, we are so amazed at the support and help from our Cadet community. If you are interested in helping, contact us - membersfhs@gmail.com. There are two drop-off locations for donations: 115 Kline Blvd., Frederick, MD 21701 and 2408 Hunters Chase Ct., Frederick, MD 21702. If you know of families who are in need of help, direct them to this link - it also contains other resources. FHS Feeder Pattern Community Needs
2) Each year the FHS-PTSA awards scholarships to graduates through Dollars For Scholars. The counselors handle the application process for students and they select the award recipients. Students should use this Scholarship Application.
3) The PTSA is raising funds for the Dollars For Scholars. Applications will be reviewed and recipients selected by the FHS counseling team. (The PTSA never sees the applicants names.)
Scholarships are awarded to students who have significantly contributed to the FHS community and show a commitment to not only further their education but also continue to serve their community.
We hope you will consider contributing to this worthy cause and help Frederick High graduates continue to make Frederick a great place to live. Our seniors deserve extra consideration this year as many of the events they hold dear and look forward to are altered by the ongoing school closure. Let’s not let them down! Giving to Dollars for Scholars gives back!
Donations may be sent to: PTSA-Dollars for Scholars (Checks made payable to FHS-PTSA, "Dollars for Scholars" in subject line)
c/o Slade 411 Fairview Avenue Frederick, MD 21701
Last but not least, we want to thank those who have given already to these causes directly or by participating in the recent Stadler Garden Center fundraiser. We know you probably are being asked to donate to many organizations. We appreciate your support. For questions, email membersfhs@gmail.com.
Stay connected on Facebook (FrederickHighPTSA) and Instagram!
FHS PTSA will be refocusing the Care4Kids campaign to realign with its original mission - providing assistance with personal care and hygiene items that are not covered by food stamps/SNAP/WIC. These necessary items are expensive and many students and families seek assistance for them through their school's counseling office.
If you would like to donate to our campaign, PERSONAL CARE and HYGIENE and BABY ITEMS are still in high demand. Gift cards in small dollar amounts are also accepted.
Our two drop off sites remain the same. Please label Care4Kids and leave your donation on the porch:
115 Kline Blvd - Kettlestrings 2408 Hunters Chase Court - Osborne For questions please contact Patti Kettlestrings - jpkstrings@comcast.net
We are so grateful for your generosity and support. We received approximately 350 requests these past few weeks! Rest assured that any remaining food donations that trickle in will continue to be distributed until they are gone.
