Greetings –
I hope this message finds you and your family healthy and happy. As we wrap up Term 3 this week I can’t tell you how proud I am to be a Cadet. Our school’s motto of “Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve” has never been more apparent the past few weeks as I’ve seen our students and teachers rise to the challenge of online learning and our community reach out to support those in need. While it can be easy to get caught up in so much negativity and fear that these uncertain times bring, it is seeing our school community rise to the occasion that I will always remember about the spring of 2020.
Speaking of the Spring of 2020, students are on Spring Break from April 9-13. Teachers will not be assigning any work during this time, and there will be no need to sign onto Schoology until April 14. When we return we will begin working on the fourth and final term of the school year.
As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to any of your teachers, counselors or administrators if there is anything we can do to assist you or your family.
Have a great Spring Break Cadets!
David Franceschina, Ed.D
Principal, FHS

We hope all of you are doing well and using this time to get in some extra reading. If you need something to read, our public library has expanded their ebooks selection. Feel free to reach out to any of us for recommendations or help with any work. We hope to see you again soon!
Congratulations to our Students of the Week:
Mrs. Pfeil: Gabbi Ntali Mr. Smith: Zoe Carnegis Mr. Cleary: Cate Osborne Mrs McGrew: Olivia Ealim Mrs. Cramer: Megan Yancer Ms. Hale: La'Maria McDuffie Ms. Kidd: Cristian Gonzalez Hernandez Mrs. Strakonsky: Stella Henson and Mia Venezia We are living through historic times. We encourage you to take note of all that is going on around you. Keep a journal perhaps; write down things you are doing, what things cost, how you are spending your free time, how you are conducting your school work/education, how this is affecting you, etc. It will one day be a historic record that you will want to share with others. You are living history right now! Years from now, people will ask you questions about this time in your life. What will you tell them? The Social Studies Department wishes everyone the best, and we want you to know that we miss you and wish we could be conducting Face to Face education!
We hope this message finds everyone well and socially distanced.
Fun Facts for the Week:
Biology - There is enough DNA in an average person's body to stretch from the sun to Pluto and back -- 17 times. PEAS- If Betelgeuse exploded, transitioning from the red supergiant stage to supernova, it would light our sky continuously for two months. It could happen anytime — within a couple of thousand years, tomorrow or even now.
Physics- It takes a photon up to 40,000 years to travel from the core of the sun to its surface, but only 8 minutes to travel the rest of the way to Earth. Chemistry-When Helium is cooled to almost absolute zero (-460°F or -273°C, the lowest temperature possible), it becomes a liquid with surprising properties: it flows against gravity and will start running up and over the lip of a glass container!
Environmental Science-27,000 trees are cut down each day so we can have Toilet Paper.

April is Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month!
So here are a few statistics for you:
We know this is not easy, but we are here to support you each and every step of the way. Teachers are also learning through this process with you. If you need help, start by emailing your teacher or send them a message in Schoology. Parents and students you can also contact our math specialist, Leslie Byrd, through Schoology or at leslie.byrd@fcps.org for additional support with math or Schoology. Even though we are not able to see you each day, we are 100% with you in this process.
Hola, Bonjour and from the World Language Department!
We miss all of you very much, and hope that you all are staying safe and healthy! If you are looking for fun things to do to learn/practice world languages or to learn about other cultures, then try out some these fun activities:
Watch television shows or a movie in the target language.
Try texting your friends in the target language.
If you know someone who speaks the language that you’re studying, call or video-chat them to practice.
Watch travel videos about other countries.
Look up recipes from other cultures, and try to make them at home.
We can’t wait to hear about all you’ve been doing the next time we see you! Take care!
Stay safe FHS. Be creative and use your artistic skills while we are out of school. Art is a great way to spend your free time. Take care of yourselves and your families.
Greeting from the CTE Department! Wishing our students and families a safe and healthy spring break. Congratulations to the CTE Students of the week, they are Nahshon McKinney and (Rulber) Alex Cruz! Some CTE ideas to keep your brain active while you are working at home:
It’s all fun and games! Play a game board or card game with a family member, then redesign a rebranded cover for the page. Also you need to change one rule that you don’t like.
If you were to redesign your room what changes would you make. Sketch out your room on a sheet of paper.
Choose a recipe from a cookbook or create your own original recipe. Document the process of making your dish with drawings and notes on paper. Include details about the ingredients, measurements, and steps to the process. Have two family members taste it and rate you from 1 to 5 stars.Take a picture of your final dish.

DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS!
The Frederick High School PTSA is raising funds to prepare for the distribution of scholarships to deserving seniors. Students are invited to apply and are selected by the FHS counseling team.
Scholarships are awarded to students who have significantly contributed to the FHS community and show a commitment to not only further their education but also continue to serve their community.
Although students are on spring break from Thursday, April 9-Monday, April 13, FCPS will continue to provide meals-to-go service on Thursday, April 9, at the usual locations and times.
On Thursday, FCPS will distribute extra meals for children to take home to cover the Friday and Monday of spring break. For pickup locations and times, please see the news release: https://www.fcps.org/about/news/1677052/fcps-feeds-children-while-schools-are-closed FCPS reminds the community that although we are happy to provide meals to go, there is risk in traveling to pick them up. We recommend following social distance and mask guidelines and handling all materials with care including washing food containers and bags with soap and water to prevent spread of the novel coronavirus.
