The first day of school is Wednesday, August 18, which means more than 360 school buses will be on the roads transporting more than 30,000 students
We wanted to remind you of transportation protocols and procedures as we get ready for the start of the 2021-22 school year.
Slow down! Be aware!
When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch out for young people walking to bus stops.
When driving in neighborhoods with school zones, slow down and be alert for children who may dart into the road unexpectedly.
Be on the lookout for school crossing guards, who work to keep everyone safe.
Yellow means slow down, red means stop
Yellow flashing lights indicate that the bus is preparing to load or unload children. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop vehicles.
Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and that children are getting on or off. Motorists approaching from either direction must wait until the red lights stop flashing before proceeding.
In school zones, be mindful of the posted speed limit.
Delays might happen!
School buses may be delayed during the first week of school -- often no fault of the driver. Young students need to get used to riding the bus. Many parents desire first day photos. And there could be other unforeseen delays. Please be patient!
You can check to see if a bus is running more than 15 minutes late. Our online bus delay form is updated live and can be found here. Online bus information, including details on bus stops, is also available via FCPS.org.
