Greeting Eagle Families,
As you may know, Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) has been approved by the Maryland State Department of Education to implement up to three virtual instructional days in lieu of systemwide closure during inclement weather. The Learn @ Home days provide FCPS flexibility in responding to various weather emergencies. In developing the FCPS plan, our goals are to mitigate disruption to learning mid-year, minimize additional days that often need to be added at the end of the school year, and keep students connected to learning in the event of an extended closure.
As a result, our school has been engaged in planning and preparation for this possibility to ensure full readiness if a virtual instruction day were to be implemented. Today, we shared important information with our students. Knowing these days can create scheduling dilemmas for families, we have developed a more flexible system for work completion. Here’s what you need to know and how you can help your child prepare in the event that a Learn @ Home Day is utilized:
Students will independently complete up to 30 minutes of asynchronous review or practice activities per content area. No new content will be introduced during a Learn @ Home Day.
These activities can be accessed in Schoology and can be completed based on your family’s schedule for the day. Teachers will have their activities posted by 8:15 am on a Learn @ Home Day.
Teachers will be available to respond to student’s questions from 9:30 am - 3:00 pm. Students should message teachers through Schoology, and they will reply when available.
Teachers will be available for optional Google Meet Drop-In sessions scheduled throughout the day (see schedule below). It’s not required that students attend the Google Meet sessions, but if additional help and support is needed, students are encouraged to drop-in. The Google Meet links will be posted on the teachers’ Schoology pages by 8:15 am on a designated Learn @ Home Day.
Attendance on a Learn @ Home Day will be recorded in two ways. Students will be counted as present by logging onto Schoology and/or by completing assignments in a timely manner. We understand there may be Internet connectivity issues for some students during inclement weather, so additional time to complete assignments will be granted upon your request when returning to school.
If your child needs support outside of the normal school hours, they may access TutorMe as needed for virtual tutoring support 24/7.
Should students encounter technical issues with their FCPS digital devices, please contact the school’s User Support Specialist, James Hanson, at james.hanson@fcps.org between 9:30 - 3:00.
Additional information about FCPS’s Learn @ Home days can be found here. I hope you and your family enjoy the flexibility that a Learn @ Home Day provides as we help mitigate disruption to learning, minimize the need to make-up additional days at the end of the year, and keep students connected to their learning.
