Dear UMS Families,
Today, we learned of a social media post and rumors that could be perceived as a threat to the safety of our school. We took quick and appropriate action, together with our law enforcement partners, to investigate and follow-up on the situation. Based on our investigation, we have determined that the rumors are not credible and our school is safe.
I am very proud of the choices students made in quickly reporting this concern to the staff they trust. We are grateful that our students know when they see something that does not feel right or safe they should report it. UMS supports the FCPS message: If you See Something, Say Something, and we encourage everyone with a concern to Report It, Don't Repeat It on social media. This allows us to investigate and take action to keep everyone safe.
Please use this opportunity to remind your student that we take any potential threat to school safety, even rumors, offhand comments, social media postings, and jokes, extremely seriously. The safety of our schools is our most important responsibility.
We appreciate your support as we continue to work together to ensure that our school remains a safe and productive place for learning.
Sincerely,
Stacey F. Hiltner
Principal, Urbana Middle School
