Dear FCPS Families and Students:
Following the tragic events in Florida, students have emerged as strong voices in the national conversation about school safety. Various groups across the country are organizing several potential events in the coming weeks.
Many middle and high school students in Frederick County have expressed an interest in participating in the national conversation locally. FCPS believes that young people, as future voters, business owners, and community leaders, benefit from being engaged in the issues and debates of the day. They have a right to speak about important issues and to be heard.
To that end, FCPS will be working with student leaders across the county, together with parents, teachers, and administrators, to determine the best educational opportunities to help students who wish to participate in national conversations to do so safely and meaningfully. We are also planning community meetings specifically for parents. We’ll share more information about this soon.
In the meantime, we thank all of the parents, families, teachers, and school staff who have been helping our students process difficult national events in appropriate ways.
