A Message from Dr. Terry Alban
Each spring, I visit all of our high schools and meet with representatives from the graduating senior classes. I always enjoy hearing about their high school experiences. They are preparing for a major transition in their lives. Change, for them, is inevitable.
Before they move on to their bright futures, I am thrilled that we will get to celebrate their graduations later this spring at outdoor ceremonies at their home high school stadiums. The full graduation schedule is online so families can plan for events that will recognize their accomplishments and follow all health and social distancing guidelines as we continue moving forward in this global health crisis.
During Wednesday night’s Board of Education of Frederick County meeting, the Board voted unanimously to allow all high school seniors to spend their last school day in person. We will ensure that can happen with all protocols being followed. More information will come directly from your school’s principal.
High school seniors are not the only ones transitioning in our system. When we started the fourth term on Tuesday, 64 percent of FCPS students were part of in-person instruction. That percentage keeps steadily increasing, and I am so appreciative of the efforts by everyone in our community to make this possible.
Our Board also voted to invite elementary students to attend school in person four days per week and adjust to the new three-feet physical distancing guidelines for spacing in classrooms recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The guidance does still encourage six feet of physical distance when students are eating lunch.
FCPS leaders recognize the significant importance of returning students to in-person instruction, especially our youngest learners. The social-emotional well being of our students is also a top priority.
Families will receive more information from their school principals as we continue to adapt to the changing response to the pandemic crisis.
