Poster Contest Winners
The Historical Society of Frederick County has announced the winners of their second annual poster contest. The Richard Markey Memorial Poster Contest provides middle school students throughout Frederick County an opportunity to explore a topic in local history and depict it graphically on a poster. The contest honors the artistic talents, civic responsibility and generosity of local graphic artist, Richard Markey. This year's theme was Innovation in Frederick County. Last year Urbana Middle School students swept all four top honors. Competition was very stiff this year with over 150 posters judged. Joey Mejia won first place and $200 for his research and drawing of the Catoctin Furnace. He was looking for an innovation that had made the greatest impact on the lives of Frederick County residents, and he felt that the long history and production of the iron works at Catoctin made it the most significant innovation. Winning honorable mention Samantha Hillmuth chose the topic of the Loats Orphanage as a way of providing an education to young girls who had no family to support them. Morgan McGrady also won honorable mention with her poster of the Skyline of Frederick. Her thesis was that the Clustered Spires of Frederick made the city unique and attracted tourists who spent money in our town and improved the economy. The awards ceremony was held on May 13 at the Delaplane Arts Center and the winning posters were on display. All students who entered the contest will receive a letter of thanks for their efforts.
