News You Can Use

UMS Talent Show
The SGA will be hosting a Talent Show on Friday, May 7th from 6:00 until 9:00 pm. We will be selling tickets at school during each grade level lunch shift starting on Thursday, April 29th through Thursday, May 6th. Tickets will cost $5.00. Unfortunately, due to a limited amount of seating, we will be unable to sell tickets at the door. We will have 25 student acts including, singing, dance, instrumental and musical show themes. Please come out and support this entertaining evening. All proceeds go toward the Eighth grade dance and end of the year carnival!!!!

It’s easy! It’s confidential! And there’s no need to print or mail anything. 
 
  1. Go to www.fcps.org any time May 5-19
  2. Click the survey icon on the home page (English or Spanish)
  3. Complete the survey, click “submit,” and you’re done!
You may fill out the survey once for each school at which you have a child. 
 
If you don’t have computer access at home or work, please check with the school office about taking the survey here. Or use a public computer at a library near you.
 
At FCPS parents count. Your support goes a long way in building a first-class school system.
 
Please remember the May 19 deadline! 
 
*Schools also have some paper versions in English and Spanish for parents who don’t have Internet access. 

PBIS Carnival

A huge Thank You to all families who have sent in their donations for the Carnival.  Thanks for all the i-tune cards, beach towels, gift cards, and many other fun items.  Even in these times where the economy is making our family budgets tight, you are showing such a wonderful generosity.

WAYS TO DONATE:
If you haven’t  been able to donate please consider doing so…. The Carnival is an event that will cater to around 700 students…. So we need all the help we can get!!  We are still in need of more prizes, food and water. Remember ALL the donations are going to be used for our students during the Carnival.
To make the donation process easier, there are three ways you can make your donations:
1.  AM & PM carpool Drop & Drive:  Just bring your donation when you come to drop-off or pick up your kids.
Friday, May 14 – 7:30 - 8:30 AM or 2:50 - 3:20 PM
Friday, May 21 – 7:30 - 8:30 AM or 2:50 – 3:20 PM

2. Have your students bring donations to the front office. There are two collection boxes.
 
3.   If you wish, you can make cash or check contributions.  If you send a check, please make it payable to UMS and write UMS Carnival in the note/memo line.  
 
Make sure you write your name and your student’s name, so we can give them Talons for every donation. If you have questions, please contact Ines Serra at serra1020@yahoo.com.

Ettiquette, Communication Table Manners Camp

Give the gift of good manners. If you were unable to make the class this year at Urbana Middle, there will be an Etiquette, Communication and Table Manners camp held at Urbana Elementary School this summer for ages 8-14. This camp is a wonderful and interactive way for middle schoolers to learn lifetime skills.  Learn how to make great first impressions, communicate with all kinds of people, make good choices and much more. Correction!
Yasas Santharam, was accidentally ommited from last week's article featuring our KMO team winning first place in the state of Maryland. Yasas has been a member of the KMO team for the past three years.

Summer Enrichment Opportunites

Looking to  challenge  you child educationally  this summer?  Check out the Summer Enrichment activities that are available HERE.  Both Johns Hopkins and Frederick Community College offer great programs. 
 
Also, Urbana teachers James Hines and Dave Adamiak will be running a two week program (July 19-30), known as "Extreme Journey Through Hallowed Ground".  Students will be challenged both academically and physically, traveling all over Maryland and parts of Virginia. Activities include hiking, biking and canoeing. We have room for 12 more students. All incoming 6th-outgoing 8th graders are eligible to attend. More info HERE.

Stop by to get a gift for mom or a new book for yourself, and support our school!  We will have a performance from the UMS orchestra and free gift wrap for your purchases! 
 
May 10 - 7 p.m. - UMS PTSA meeting - UMS media center.
 
May 21 - 7-9:30 p.m. - UMS Multicultural Fair & Open Gym Night!  Please bring the whole family!  We will be sharing arts, crafts, food, and customs from many different cultures, while the gym is open for basketball and fun! 
 
May 26th - 7 p.m. - Suicide Awareness & Prevention Presentation - UMS Media Center
 
You may think that suicide is not something that your family members, your children, or your friend's children, would ever consider.  But, please, take some time and join us for this presentation.  It is one you will not want to miss!  We as a community need to come together and learn about the signs and contributing factors.  Mental illness, depression, bullying....these are all factors.  However, you need not suffer from these and other major factors to be at risk.  Please join us for this important presentation and discussion.  Ms. Lisa Hurka Covington, founder and executive director of S.P.E.A.K. (Suicide Prevention Education Awareness for Kids) will be presenting.
 
Coming in June.......8th grade fun day!!  We are working on putting together a great day just for the 8th graders!  Our plans are still underway, but it should be a nice way to send them off to high school!  Stay tuned!
