News From the Music Department
This past week, several UMS music students took part in the FCPS Solo and Ensemble Festival. For this event, students prepared an individual instrumental solo or a small ensemble piece to prepare and perform for an evaluator who rates the performance on a scale of 1-4 with 1 being a "superior" rating. Students who earn a 1 advance to compete at the state level. Alan Jiang and Parker Irwin performed a duet and earned a rating of 2 which is "good." Richard Miao performed a solo and also earned a rating of 2. Michael Mitchell, Hannah Stauffer, and Kailee Unangst all performed solos and earned a 1. Lena Boyer and Hannah Stauffer also earned a 1 on their duet. The state competition will take place on Saturday May 15th at Towson University. Congratulations music students on this great achievement!
Spelling Bee Winners
Congratulations to UMS students Arun Kulkarni and Yasas Santharam for making it into the finals of the 3rd Annual Frederick County Spelling Bee. Both students will participate in the finals on May 2 at the Weinberg Center. Good luck to Arun and Yasas.
UMS Named "Top School"
Urbana Middle School has been named a “Top School” for the state of Maryland in the 2009 Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth Talent Search due to the number of students we enrolled in the program. All elementary and middle schools, both public and private are eligible to send students into the program.
Linganore High School Cheerleading Meeting for Incoming Freshmen
What: Meeting for students interested in Fall 2010 cheerleading at Linganore High School.
When: Wednesday, April 14th 6:30pm
Where: Linganore @Oakdale High School cafeteria
Who: all interested students and their parents.
Students can use this meeting to get all of the necessary information for off season clinics, conditioning, fundraisers, camp, and tryouts! They can also pick up forms that will be needed to try out on August 16th.
Latina Conference
Hood College and the ELL Department are planning a Conferencia Latina (Latin Conference) on April the 17th at Hood College.
We will have different workshops for parents and students. The workshops will be about:
How do deal with and report bullying in the school
College life
Strategies on how to deal with harassment and gangs
Ideas for parents to help their children on how to achieve academic success
