National History Day Winners
Congratulations to the following winners of the Frederick County National History Day competition. The theme this year was Innovations in History. Rachel Mitnick won for her paper on medicine. Yasas Santharam won for her documentary on Herbal Medicine. Michael Mitchell, Amil Sahal and Arun Kulkarni won for their performance about the National Parks. Iniyan Chezhian won for his website about the compass. They now advance onto the Maryland State competition on April 24 at the University of Maryland Baltimore county. Good Luck!

 

Field Hockey Camp

The Pennies for Peace Coin Drive Surpasses Expectations!
During a Friday homeroom lesson students learned about Pennies for Peace, an international organization that helps build community-based schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Even one penny makes a difference to help promote literacy abroad. Students united to make the Coin Drive a huge success by raising $490.57! Thank you students and families for supporting this international program.

Congratulations!
Congratulations to 6th grader Kellen Liu for winning the Grand Prize at the 24th annual Middle School Talent Competition of the Performing Arts presented by Frederick Optimist Club on March 6th, 2010. She performed “Harvest Drums” using a Chinese Zither in the Instrumental category. She won a $1500 savings bond.

Support the For the Love of Reading Program!
Urbana Middle School Student Ambassadors and Future Teachers CCA are planning a special program for the kindergarten classes at Centerville Elementary School and Urbana Elementary School.

Please support this special event! Eat at Ledo’s in Urbana anytime on March 22, 2010! Ledo’s will donate 20% of your check to the “For the Love of Reading Program”

You may also help by donating gently used kindergarten through early chapter books! Book donation boxes will be located in the UMS Lobby and Cafeteria from
March 15, 2010 to Thursday, April 15, 2010.

Join the PTSA of UMS and the PTA of UES & CES in helping the Student Ambassadors and Future Teachers foster a child’s love of reading!

PTSA Announcements

UMS OPEN GYM NIGHT!  FRIDAY, MARCH 26TH, 7-9:30 P.M.

We all know that at the middle school age, all our kids want to do is "hang out".  We, as parents, want them to have fun and be safe.  So, the UMS PTSA is holding an Open Gym Night on Friday, March 26th, from 7-9:30 p.m.  For only $5, your child can come hang out with friends, play some basketball, Wii, or other games, and have some yummy snacks.  Drop them off for a fun night and know that they are having a great time!  Permission slips will be going home soon!
