Calling all talented young writers! - Announcing the UMS Young Authors Contest sponsored by the Frederick County Reading Council and the State of Maryland International Reading Council

This is an excellent opportunity for students to showcase their creative writing talents. The contest runs from Nov. 9- Dec. 16. Grade level winners will be selected for poetry and short story, and announced before winter break. Contest rules and guidelines must be followed exactly to be eligible.

UMS school winners are automatically entered into the county competition. County winners are recognized at a special Young Author celebration in the spring. Any state winners are invited to attend the SoMIRAC conference’s Young Authors’ celebration in April 14, 2010 in Hunt Valley, Maryland.

Submit your entries with a completed cover sheet to your Language Arts teacher no later than Wed., December 16, 2009.

Links to the Cover Sheet and Guidelines are in this notice and can also be accessed from the Language Arts Department Page of the UMS website.

Lost and Found - We have a large number of winter coats, jackets and sweatshirts on our lost and found table.  There are no names in them.  Any clothing left here after Thanksgiving will be donated.  Please have your student check the table if they are missing clothing.

Urbana Middle School Coin Drive! - The 4th Annual Coins for Wishes Drive will begin on Monday, December 7, 2009 and continues through Friday, December 11, 2009. The Coins for Wishes Drive supports community families during the holidays.  Students may bring in donations to help raise money so these families and their children will have a nice holiday. Students may bring checks or cash. Checks should be payable to UMS.

The grade level that raises the most money will receive an extended lunch with 10 extra minutes for social time and recess. The winning homerooms, 1 per grade level, will receive a doughnut breakfast. The incentives will be provided December 18, 2009. Last year, we raised over $1,600 in one week.

Please consider making a contribution to this important event! Thank you for your generosity!

Urbana Middle School Giving Board - The sponsored families have identified items of need for the holidays. Items include clothing, games, toys, books, and “basic needs.” These items are on our “Giving Board” located in the faculty room. The “Giving Board” will also include items such as gift wrap, bows, boxes, gift bags, scotch tape, and tissue paper.

If you would like to help support this important cause, please stop by Urbana Middle School and pull a gift request tag from our board in the faculty lounge. The Giving Board items will be available on November 19, 2009 through December 15, 2008. Please return the unwrapped item to the school, by December 16, 2009.

If you have any questions regarding the Coin for Wishes Drive or the Giving Board, please contact Dana Lippy (240-566-9223).
